It's 9:45 am (!!) when I wake up in my closet room. For the first time, we actually slept in late. The water is already rising in front of the house. I make myself a coffee, sit in the rocking chair in front of the window, and observe the scene. It rained heavily at night and fog hangs over the forests on the other side of the Passamaquoddy Bay. We have a leisurely breakfast without any time pressure and then we are busy documenting the water level development under our living room. At 12:47 pm, the water reaches its highest point at 7.6m and splashes around the house wall. The wooden staircase from the apartment below us, which practically leads to the 'beach', is partially submerged. The seaweed mountains in front of our house wall are now flooded. If you look out the windows of the living room to the right and straight ahead, you feel like you're on a ship. All you see is water all around.
Only 30 minutes after the high point, you can clearly see the water receding and shortly afterwards the lower stairs of the wooden staircase are free again.
Around 2 pm, we start moving, driving around the town, seeing deer, and going to the lighthouse that we can see from our apartment. It's not accessible, but there are some pretty cool houses all around it. From here, we can see our house. We then head up to the Kingsbrae Gardens, which are a sight to see in St. Andrews, but in the fall, they attract visitors more with sculptures than with flowers. We skip the $16 entrance fee (!), walk around the freely accessible part, and are happy that the weather is clearing up significantly. Suddenly, it's 17°C and the sun is shining from a clear sky.
We cut short our exploration tour and the planned shopping spree on Water Street and return to our terrace, sitting in the sun, reading, and observing the continuing receding water that leaves behind a huge wide beach and lowers the turquoise boat down again at the town's pier. By noon, it was almost at the level of the pier, now it's almost on the ground.
Shortly after 5 pm, the sun is not as strong anymore, so we stroll along Water Street without buying anything. Some stores are closed anyway, either 'for the season' or because they close at 5 pm. Instead of going to a restaurant, we have canned food from the local supermarket, which is open until 9 pm. Before that, we grab a coffee outside of St. Andrews and return to our terrace for sunset around 6:30 pm, starting to enjoy the only bottle of wine we will have in this vacation.
The sunset unfolds before us into a magnificent spectacle, while slowly an incredible starry sky becomes visible and the Milky Way runs directly above us. It's still almost 20°C on this evening - we've never had that before.
