The Fiordland and Milford Sound

Byatangajwe: 24.01.2018

The Fiordland is New Zealand's largest and most impenetrable wilderness. This rugged and mountainous area is densely forested and dotted with deeply cut fjords. The vast wilderness area covers an area of 2.6 million hectares and is internationally renowned for its unique geological formations.

Our main goal in Fiordland National Park was, of course, Milford Sound. As the name suggests, everything revolves around water and the backdrop of the surrounding mountains. That's why we booked a boat tour.

With 7000 mm of rainfall per year, this area is one of the rainiest regions in New Zealand. Unfortunately, it is always very foggy in Milford Sound due to the heavy rain, and we were not lucky enough to experience a blue sky.

Nevertheless, our boat trip was really beautiful and we could see the Mitre Peak rising beautifully from the dark water and experience roaring waterfalls. In the unique habitat, we also observed some sea lions basking on the rocks.

Approximately 500,000 visitors visit Milford Sound annually, and in the high season, boats from various operators depart every 2 hours. This tour is probably the most touristy thing we have done so far, but in the face of the magnificent landscape, the many visitors appear very tiny and one realizes how small they actually are in this world.
