5.5.2022 From Sète, I initially head towards Agde, I drive along the beach for a long time (about 15km), at the moment it is still empty, in summer there will be a lot going on there. After Agde, the route continues west, and then there is a missing piece of road before a bridge over a canal, a sketch describes the detour, i.e. about 2.5km back. Why this is not marked earlier is ...?
A few kilometers later, I come to the Canal du Midi, which I will follow for the next few days. In Beziers, the canal crosses a river L'Orb with a bridge. Shortly after, there is a 9-step lock staircase.
In the past, the canal was lined with plane trees, so it felt like driving through a tunnel. Unfortunately, virtually all of the trees have been affected by a fungus, they are being gradually cut down and replaced with a resistant variety. So far, about 40,000 trees have been felled.
My destination today is Le Somail, a small village with some restaurants and accommodation options, known for its narrow stone arch bridge.
