09.03.
At 10 o'clock we started. We had a 6-7 hour drive ahead of us.
Despite the rain, the drive went quite well, but because we still had to buy groceries and sunscreen and insect repellent, everything was delayed.
Actually, we had chosen a campsite at a lake in the Byfield State Forrest. The last 11 km there were gravel road and due to the rain of the last days it was flooded with big puddles.
Susi had a hard time driving on the hilly road and through the water, and when a small stream crossed our path, we gave up. We spent the night on the side of the road in the middle of the pitch-dark forest. But that was better than getting stuck, because we didn't even have reception for a text message.
Today, the 10th of March, I was already awake at 6 o'clock due to the drumming rain. Because of the nervousness that the road was completely flooded by now, I couldn't fall asleep anymore, so I woke up Leo and we drove back as soon as possible. As quickly as possible means a little faster than walking speed here...
When we almost made it, three kangaroos appeared in front of us. Seeing live kangaroos in the wild saved the trip. :D
We drove until noon and then checked into a campsite in Airlie Beach, where we will spend the next 4 nights before going to the Whitsundays.
