Alaska and Canada May 26 - June 9, 2023 May 31, 2023

Byatangajwe: 06.07.2023

Today we are heading to Haines, on the shores of Lynn Canal. Haines has a population of 1,650 and was home to the Chilkat Tlingit before the days of the Gold Rush. The Chilkat Tlingit were known for weaving intricate patterns into mountain goat and yellow cedar bark. This creative spirit continues to thrive in Haines' flourishing art scene. In relation to its population, Haines has more artists than any other city in the Southeast, which is why the local galleries and workshops have diverse art collections. Carved totem pole art, silverwork, sculptures, and photographs are just some of the art forms we will see here. Along with Skagway, Haines is the only port in the Alaska Panhandle that can be reached by land. The Haines Highway, which branches off from the Alaska Highway at Haines Junction in the Canadian territory of Yukon, ends here. We will continue towards Tracy Arm.
