Lent started last Wednesday. Here, it means that until Easter, you are not allowed to eat meat on Fridays and during the entire week before Easter. However, turtles and iguanas (a small reptile) are considered acceptable by the Catholic faith. Other than that, there is no need to give up anything. In fact, there are special sweets to compensate for the sacrifices. Additionally, it is not appropriate to go to the beach on these days as such pleasures are not suitable. Some time ago, a family from Granada ignored this and tragically died in a car accident while on their way to the beach.
On the mentioned days, there are also masses and processions. Nevertheless, this evening a mini-procession passed by our house. Six or eight carriers had a wooden structure with a life-sized statue of Christ on their shoulders. It was illuminated by two lamps powered by a generator, which in turn had to be pushed on a small wooden cart behind the statue. It was a task that required precision, as the lamp cables were quite short. This ensemble was accompanied by an uncoordinated brass band without rhythm and perhaps ten other participants. While I initially found this group of devoted believers "touching" or "cute," the passersby made the sign of the cross in all seriousness. Perhaps I lack the necessary seriousness. Naughty girl.
Weather today: mostly cloudy with some rain showers, up to 31 degrees.
