2.3. Goethe's Garden House

Byatangajwe: 08.03.2018

After our short break, we continued to Goethe's Garden House. It is located near a small river, surrounded by pure nature. This landscape and the associated nature influenced Goethe's poetry. The garden house is built on a slope. It was quite a sporty act to reach the entrance. In order to visit the house, we paid 2.50 euros as students, as an adult you would have had to pay 6.00 euros. It was worth it for us to visit the house. We got a much better impression of how nature affected Goethe's life. In Faust, the passage lines 3220-3240 also show the influence of nature on Faust. He uses the term 'brothers' to describe the relationship between nature and humans, making it clear that he tried to connect the divine represented by nature with humans, the earthly. With this creation, he provides insights into the inner emotional world of Faust. Nature soothes Faust and gives him a sense of peace. The harmony with nature describes the inner balance for Goethe and therefore his work, which can be described as pantheistic. 'The Rising of the Moon' is a fitting example for this, where the moon, symbolizing nature, is depicted as purity. It rises and strives towards the divine, which also suggests the connection between nature, sky, and the individual. We sat at Charlotte's favorite spot, Goethe's wife. After taking in the whole landscape, we also felt a sense of inner harmony.

The garden house is worth a visit. It combines nature and history. We have to continue now, hopefully we won't get lost. If you don't hear from us, you'll know why.

See you soon, wish us luck.
