Outback & Western Australia | Week 24 | 11.03. - 03/17/24

On Monday morning we were able to attend a kangaroo feeding at the bush campsite. The owner feeds the kangaroos every morning

We then drove on to Port Lincoln where we made a quick stop at the beach. From there we continued towards Port Kenny where we stayed overnight again in a bush camp.

On Tuesday we first went to Baird Bay, a small fishing village known for its sea lions and dolphins. Unfortunately we didn't see any of the animals except huge pelicans. We then took the Eyre Highway (1650km) which leads via Ceduna and Yalata into the Nullarbor Desert. The Nullarbor is a flat karst desert in South Australia with very few trees. This is really a no-man's land and apart from the highway and a roadhouse with a gas station every 150km, there is absolutely nothing here. We then spent the night at a parking lot near the cliffs. The next day was our longest journey. Continue through the Nullarbor, on the longest straight stretch in Australia (146.6km), past the border with Western Australia, past the Nuytsland Nature Reserve and Dundas Nature Reserve to Norseman (first smaller town with gold reserves after around 1000km of the outback). From there we continued to our next stop in Esperence. Conclusion of the day: Over 1000km in 10 hours, almost only a straight route and hundreds of road trains (very long trucks).

We spent Thursday in Esperence on Twilight Beach and in the evening in a bar with other backpackers.

Unfortunately, the weather wasn't forecast well for the following days, so on Friday we set off towards Margaret River on the west coast (7.5 hour drive). When we got there we were able to take in the sunset.

On Saturday we went to the farmers market and to the sea for breakfast and then to the beach. In the afternoon we drove to Boranup Forest, a forest with karri trees that grow up to 65m high. Unfortunately, the effects of the bush/forest fires of 2021 were still visible here (charred tree trunks). Afterwards we went for a stroll to Margaret River and then went camping on a farm in Anniebrook.

On Sunday we headed to Busselton and spent the day at the beach and in town.
