Recoleta (6.2.2021)

Publicado: 06.02.2021

Today we were out and about in the city again, as there is still so much to discover. That's why this time we went to Recoleta. We actually wanted to visit the famous cemetery, but it has been closed since August due to Corona (the reasons are somewhat unclear) and is only accessible to relatives at certain times. But there was still plenty of other things to discover, like the Floralis genérica. It is a 20-meter-high sculpture in the Plaza de las Naciones Unidas. It is movable and made of stainless steel and aluminum, and is controlled by a hydraulic system and photocells, opening or closing depending on the position of the sun...

We also visited the Gomera de la Recoleta, a 200-year-old rubber tree that stands in front of the Recoleta Cemetery, under the shade of which you can comfortably sit in Cafe La Biela. The cafe is a characteristic meeting place and is one of the most representative in the city. Inside the cafe, there are two sculptures of Jorge Luis Borges and Adolfo Bioy Casares, both writers who were regulars at the cafe...

After that, we visited the Ateneo, a very impressive bookstore. The bookstore is a former theater. In the 1920s, it was converted into a cinema and since 2000, it has been the existing bookstore. In 2008, it was named the second most beautiful bookstore in the world by 'The Guardian'.

The colorful building with the monkey is the cultural center of Recoleta.

On the way home through the evening rush hour traffic, we shot the following video...
