Hiroshima memorial and museum

Publicado: 02.12.2018

The museum commemorating the victims of the first atomic bomb is currently undergoing complete renovation. However, the west wing has already reopened and now includes a cross-section of exhibits from the previous museum and parts of the new multimedia content.

In particular, the new app with touchscreen control is successful and provides a very detailed portrayal of the events at that time. A huge abundance of documents has been collected, scanned, and stored in a searchable manner, held together by an intuitive, clear interface.

That's what museums are like today!

Images of victims and scorched landscape impressively convey the destructive power unleashed back then.

In terms of content, I find the letters to former President Truman from the scientists working on the atomic bomb as well as from the military particularly interesting.

In contrast, the memorial is an almost meditative place that commemorates the victims and serves as a monument against (nuclear) war. The modern architecture incorporates directly the numbers and data of the catastrophe at that time. For example, the walls show parts of the destroyed city of Hiroshima.

These images were composed of over 140,000 mosaics, corresponding to the estimated number of victims of the bomb drop.

Informative and depressing in equal parts, but definitely recommended to visit.
