Nanutarra Roadhouse and Exmouth

Publicado: 22.08.2024

August 15 - August 18

August 15 - Today we woke up with the sun, as we had a long journey ahead. Following the recommendation of the visitor center, we drove via Tom Price and then Paraburdoo to avoid a dirt road used by road trains. We anticipated an 8-hour drive, but it only took about 6 hours until we arrived at Nanutarra Roadhouse. Our journey was briefly interrupted at a railway crossing, as we had to wait for a train that was over 2 km long to pass. Upon arriving at Nanutarra Roadhouse, we finally had showers and normal restrooms again. The campground was rather cramped, so we got to know two Australian women. They entertained us all evening with fascinating stories about Australia and provided us with a snake first aid kit.

August 16 - The goal of today was to get back to the coast, namely to explore Exmouth. We liked the small town. It was lively, including a small market and a beach vibe. We spent the night at a campground that was provided by the community to counteract free camping.

August 17 - Cape Range National Park was on today's to-do list. We went snorkeling at Turquoise Beach. It was Viviane's first time. We were both thrilled by the underwater world. We didn't have underwater cameras at that time. Afterwards, we drove to Vlaming Head Lighthouse, where there was a memorial for World War II and a lot of information about the lighthouse, as well as the animals and people in the area. From this viewpoint, we spotted our first whale in the distance. Back in Exmouth, we found underwater cameras in a store. The cameras were equipped with film. We then continued to Bullara Station Stay. Bullara is a farm that has a large campground in the middle of nowhere. Here, you experience camping in the outback in a new way. Old meets modern with rustic showers and restrooms, but also coffee with cake, coffee, and atmospheric lights.

August 18 - Today we took it easy, meaning doing laundry, cleaning the car, exercising, and exploring the farm, including having coffee. In the evening, we took a walk to the Sunset Hills, where we enjoyed the sunset. The surroundings impressed with vibrant red sand and a nearly full moon.
