War history and apple trees

Publicados: 13.08.2020

That really poured down last night! Accordingly, everything was muddy and large puddles formed on the site this morning. After breakfast, we wanted to leave at 9 o'clock, but that turned out to be more difficult than expected. The place was on several levels and we had to drive up a small incline to the next higher level. However, there was a huge mud puddle in the driveway and Herbert's tires spun, and we got stuck on the hill. Herbert really sweated it out. So, gather speed and hit the gap between a tree on the right and a flower pot on the left, and zoom up at full throttle! What an action, but everything went well. We still had a bit of fluttering nerves though...

A short time later, we were back on the road towards Omaha Beach. The route ran through avenues where the fog didn't want to dissipate. But eventually, we finally arrived at the Overlord Museum, which recreates scenes and equipment from D-Day in Normandy. This is something for Dad. Tanks, cannons, weapons, soldiers' equipment... all original pieces from that time. Afterwards, we walked for 15 minutes to the American Cemetery. There are those white crosses, like you often see in movies or pictures. But the extent really makes you think. There are 9,385 graves there, and there is also a memorial wall with 1,557 names of missing soldiers. And those are just the Americans! Unbelievable, how big the area is...

Continuing along Omaha Beach, there was a huge monument commemorating the fallen soldiers, which we also visited on foot. The beach itself is absolutely fantastic, fine sand and clean... Only the weather today didn't invite so many bathers. But at least it didn't rain - hey!

By now it was afternoon and I used our parking space app to find a suitable accommodation for the night. That was quickly found - the place "les pommiers". That means "the apple trees" and it's absolutely lovely. The owners are an older couple who welcome guests and let them camp on their large property. We actually just wanted to take a look around, but the nice gentleman proudly showed us the pitches, which are really huge. Behind the family's house there are several toilet and shower houses, facilities for motorhome service and disposal are also provided, and in the communal area there are refrigerators, freezers, microwaves, an ironing board and iron... everything well thought out and super friendly. After we had paid with his wife and Herbert had parked, Grandpa came over again and gave us tips on how to park better, where the sun rises, and even brought us an extension cable to the motorhome because the power outlet was a bit too far away. And now here we are, after driving 120 kilometers during the day and covering about 10 kilometers on foot, sitting under the apple tree and enjoying the evening.

Best regards
