02.03. Merzouga The day started promisingly. I got up and opened the door: bright sunshine and a warmth that we hadn't had on our journey before. I stepped out, closed the door, and set up a table and chair for breakfast. Now I wanted to boil water for tea, but I had to realize that the door didn't open anymore, the key was inside and the driver's door was locked. In the past, panic would have reached out its tendrils for my heart in such a situation. But not anymore! Fortunately, I am so forgetful that my back garage door is rarely locked. The lock was open today too. So I could crawl in, lift up the bed from below, and climb into the car that way. Bravo!
I was looking forward to the fresh baguette that a young Moroccan distributes to the cars every morning. It is soft on the inside and crispy on the outside, just the way I like it. Butter, jam, Nutella, and tea, the piece of baguette was quickly spread. I sat there, looking at the desert, the sun, and the bright blue sky above me, and took a bite of my baguette with pleasure. It crunched wonderfully, but... What was that? There was something hard... Even when I touched it with my tongue, I had a bad feeling... A tooth! Really! This can't be true! I had broken a tooth on my wonderfully crispy baguette. Wonderful! I imagined lying on the dentist's chair with medieval treatment instruments in Morocco. Most people's teeth here probably look so bad because no one dares to go to the torturers with their drills, screws, and clamps. No, thanks! I'll spare myself that, come what may. Fortunately, I have no pain. So far...
I had arranged a meeting with Birgit and Udo for today to introduce them as participants of our journey. Udo prefers to stay in the background, so I am having the conversation alone with our tour photographer. Birgit is 65 years old and has two sons who have long since taken care of their own lives, of course. The medical technical assistant practically came into the world as a camper. "My parents always went camping, later with a caravan and then with a motorhome." And so it was with Birgit's family. They have had a motorhome since 2005. Birgit's favorite memories are of their trips to Croatia. "I love the sea and the mountains. I can still feel it, the water, how wonderfully warm it still was in September."
However, she did not have her best vacation with a motorhome. It was a flight to the USA, to be exact, four flights. "Yes, but the best one of them was our round trip from Los Angeles, the drives on the highway, the Route 66, the side trip to Las Vegas... I'll never forget that." She and her husband travel as guests with the Reisemobilfreunden Europa, with whom they have also been to Lausitz. But that was just a side trip compared to the tour through Morocco. "The landscape is simply breathtaking," Birgit raves. "So many contrasts, also among the people, this poverty and wealth." Not to mention the weather: "From sunshine to snowfall... We really had everything."
But that's not all for Birgit yet. They will take the ferry to Algeciras with the group, but then stay in Spain. "I would love to see the Snake Bay in Malaga," says Birgit. And then just go with the flow. "Let's see how the weather is. Maybe we'll follow the sun..."
