Chiapas: San Cristóbal de las Casas and Palenque to conclude our sabbatical

خپور شوی: 30.11.2021

It's been almost exactly 7 weeks since we waited for our flight back to Germany in Mexico - time flies! Everyday life has caught up with us and the final blog post about our wonderful time in Chiapas, the poorest and most beautiful state in Mexico, is coming very late.

We spent most of our time in the beautiful city of San Cristóbal de las Casas in the Spanish colonial style. The city is the perfect starting point for all trips to the mountainous, forested regions around it and is itself so worth seeing and cozy that you can easily spend a few weeks here.

We were still traveling in Chiapas as a trio: Kevin from Chicago accompanied us for a total of almost 7 weeks, so we experienced a lot together.

In addition to the breathtaking Cañón del Sumidero National Park (I think the numerous pictures speak for themselves), smaller ecological parks and colorful markets, we took a trip to the indigenous villages of Chamula and Zinacatán. We also visited the El Chiflón Waterfall and the Lagunas de Montebello National Park, where we were briefly in Guatemala for about 20 minutes.

We were also lucky enough to spend Mexican Independence Day in San Cristóbal, where the Mexicans (and tourists) were definitely celebrating. ;)

With our coworking hostel, we lived in an environment for 3 weeks that was like a small family. We worked during the day, ate together on weekends and evenings, did something or just made a bonfire. For example, we showed how to make delicious campfire bread and gave ourselves a little childhood moment.

By the way, Kevin didn't accompany us to Palenque anymore, which was our last stop in Chiapas. On the way, we drove through the most beautiful landscapes, uphill... downhill... uphill... downhill, visited great waterfalls, and visited the ruins in Palenque.

On the way back to the airport and to Germany, we made a short stop in Mérida to see our friends from the summer months again.

Now we are back in Leipzig and look back on an incredible year. We have gained countless new impressions, experienced a lot, and above all: have made new friendships all over the world. We are grateful for the privilege of having such an experience, even in a year like this. Now we are enjoying our time at home, looking forward to a lovely Christmas season, and secretly planning our next trips. ;)

Until then, we always fondly remember the past months. If you'd like, we've created a video with the most meaningful impressions from the entire sabbatical, which we'd be happy to show you as well.

Finally, we would like to thank all the readers! We have been consistently amazed at who has been following us here on the blog and reading the posts. It was a great joy to us! :)
