Day 17: back to mother tongue - Dresden

ਪ੍ਰਕਾਸ਼ਿਤ: 18.09.2017

Rested and stress-free, we packed our backpacks and headed to the train station in the morning. On the way, we bought ourselves a breakfast and enjoyed it on a cozy bench in front of the station, basking in the sunshine. The train ride from Prague to Dresden was like a hop, skip, and jump compared to our previous train journeys. Just two and a quarter hours later, we arrived in Dresden, slightly cloudy but still beautiful, and purchased two day tickets for public transportation. After a short orientation on how to get to our accommodation, which we had once again booked through Airbnb, we took the appropriate trams. The trams glided smoothly on green tracks through the seemingly stress-free city. It didn't take long before we were warmly greeted by our host and shown around the premises.

Already feeling hungry, we took the tram to the Old Town and settled down at 'Hans im Glück', a delicious burger joint. Fueled by a vegetarian burger and a spicy burger, we made our plans for Dresden while strolling through the autumn market at Altmarkt. We indulged in sweet waffles and walked towards our first attraction, the Kreuzkirche. The interior of the church surprised us with its modern reinforced concrete vault. Only at the base of the walls and certain columns were there still remnants of the old masonry that had survived the firestorm of 1945.

Passing by the town hall, we spontaneously decided to take the tram to the Neustadt of Dresden and explore the area there. We walked through the avenues of Neustadt, passed by some beautiful buildings, and finally strolled along the Elbe river with a view of the Old Town on the opposite bank. Feeling a bit tired, we then made our way back to the accommodation and spent the rest of the day in comfort.
