04.12.18 ... Barely there, bikes screwed together and off we went

Maxxanfame: 04.12.2018

After a restless night with a lot of turbulence, we landed at Windhoek Airport at 7:30 am local time. There was a momentarily tension whether our bike cases actually made it on the flight.

First good news: Not only our luggage, but also our bike cases arrived completely.

Second good news:

A quick opening of the bike cases confirms that all bikes seem to have arrived unharmed. So let's get out of the airport and into the shuttle jeep to the hotel.

During the drive, we saw the first baboons and kudu (an antelope species). Klaus Käfer, our guide, promptly informed us that the baboons are apparently "Did Not Finish" bikers from previous Desert Dash events. A look at their behinds confirmed this. 😜😜.

Arriving at the hotel, we had a delicious breakfast. Then we checked into the rooms and started assembling the bikes.

Third good news:

The bikes are indeed intact. Now Marco could finally relax and his vacation could officially begin.😎

Before fatigue took over, the five of us went on a first exploration ride on the track. Destination: Kupferberg Pass.

Uli and Georg were in the air-conditioned jeep, and Marco and I once again realized how wonderful it is to bike in the sun.

After covering the first kilometers on the "Black Mamba" road as a group (yes, that's really what it's called), we headed off-road and uphill. Even during the leisurely warm-up, sweat was pouring, because at the summit of Kupferberg Pass, the thermometer showed a speedy 43°.

Short photo stop and drinking break, and then it went downhill on the gravel roads. They are quite bumpy, requiring concentration. This will be a real challenge during the race (and then many hours in the dark).

Now we at least know roughly what to expect. We will probably do the same exercise again tomorrow, but well-rested this time.

Back at the hotel, the cozy part finally came, chilling by the pool.

Afterwards, a delicious dinner with the whole group (some ate "oryx steak" for the first time) and now, shortly after the Sandman, off to bed.

Good night Johnboy, good night Mary-Ann, good night Marcus, Uli, Marco and Georg.
