Island Tag 16: at Lake Myvatn

Lofalitsidwa: 05.07.2022

We both slept badly, but we managed to get through it and had a really nice day today:

1) Goðafoss, one of the big waterfalls. Here it's more about symmetry and uniformity than about being particularly high/deep/long.

2) The geothermal field at Lake Myvatn. I find these steaming and stinking fissures and mud pools super exciting and could watch them for hours. It bubbles and hisses and smokes, it's a true delight. The earth is alive and breathing. Of course, it also smells like hydrogen sulfide, but with the wind today, it's not that bad.

3) The Hverfjall volcanic crater. Susanne read somewhere that you can walk around it on the outside and wants to do that. It's a total of 170 meters in elevation and 4.5 km, so a very moderate little hike with fantastic views and all levels of headwind to tailwind.

New for me: we haven't withdrawn any cash in Iceland, so far we've been able to pay for everything with a card, from parking tickets (via payment app) to coffee in a tiny village café. There's even a toilet house here that you can only enter if you've printed out a QR code on a card at the entrance, which you then scan at the turnstile.

4) The swimming pool Jarðböðin við Mývatn: actually a wastewater pond from the geothermal power plant, something between a not-so-hot spring, a sulfur pool and a natural swimming pool. In any case, very nice and with a great view.
