Atacama Desert and Salar de Uyuni

Lofalitsidwa: 05.02.2020

Lip balm ready and let's go: Welcome to the driest desert in the world.

After a short stop in Santiago, we traveled by bus to San Pedro de Atacama. From there, there are many ways to explore the Atacama Desert. We chose a tour through Valle de Luna, where we learned a lot about the formation of the desert and visited some impressive viewpoints. Furthermore, Sandro gathered all his courage and accompanied Malvina on a horseback ride through the desert. In the end, there was a physical challenge: climbing Cerro Toco. A distance of 2.5 km with 600 meters of elevation may sound trivial, but since the hike started at 5000 meters above sea level and the summit is at 5604 meters above sea level, we were quite out of breath.

The next morning, our tour to Bolivia started with the goal of visiting Salar de Uyuni. On the way, we saw lagoons in all possible colors, geysers, rock formations, canyons, and lots of llamas, vicuñas, and viscachas. However, the highlight was definitely the sunrise over the salt flats of Salar de Uyuni, an unforgettable sight.

Now we are in La Paz, the capital of Bolivia, and soon we will continue to Costa Rica, from where we want to travel up through Central America towards Mexico.
