10-12-19: Day 1 (3): Security situation

Lofalitsidwa: 11.12.2019

The current security situation has been on our minds even before departure. The soldiers have disappeared from the cityscape again. Police can be seen at many corners, but they are mainly occupied with their mobile phones. Graffiti on the walls tell the story of what has happened in the past months. In addition, many subway stations are damaged and closed.

After really great impressions today, we decided to visit the (according to the travel guide) trendy district of Italy. On the way there, we noticed the many young people who were heading in the same direction. We also found it interesting that some of the street vendors were selling ski goggles, respiratory masks, scarves, and flags. Then, when a water cannon vehicle crossed the street 100 meters in front of us and started its work (spraying water on protesters), everything became clear to us. Ski goggles for protection against rubber bullets, respiratory masks for tear gas, and scarves for disguising. We decided to retreat when a man in a doorway took a large cloth from a table and revealed a large quantity of bandages underneath. We did not want to experience the outcome of the situation. On the way back, we noticed that many shops had already barricaded their entrances. 'Is ja nochmal jut jegangen!' (It turned out alright in the end!)

At the hotel, we were told that only three rooms were occupied and especially all other Germans had canceled. Really a shame! Even though it may sound different above, it's really not dangerous here.
