Sardinia Day 9 - Friday, the public holiday

Lofalitsidwa: 03.06.2023

Finally a break! Nothing was planned for today, we could spend the Italian National Day, which commemorates the founding of the Italian Republic, as we pleased.

Since some of us didn't feel like spending the day at the campsite, a group of about 40 people set off at 11 o'clock to visit the Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune's Grotto).

From the port of Alghero, we took a boat towards Capo Caccia. Capo Caccia is a limestone promontory that overlooks the Bay of Alghero. The cliffs, which are about 200 meters high and almost vertical, could already be seen from the city walls yesterday.

After a boat trip of about an hour, we reached the stalactite cave, which is located directly by the sea at the foot of a steep cliff. The Mediterranean showed us its best side that day and enchanted us with its blue-turquoise colors!

Passing impressive stalactite formations and a shining underground saltwater lake, we walked in single file through the cave and listened to a guided tour in Italian through the fixed speakers. At first, we thought it was an audio guide from a recording, until a loud "Psssst" made us understand that the German travel group was once again too loud. At least some facts were repeated in English from time to time ;) The branched cave system is about 4 km long, but only a few hundred meters are accessible to the public. And even though we couldn't understand everything the tour guide said, this natural spectacle is absolutely fascinating and worth seeing!

We then returned to Alghero by boat under bright sunshine. Once there, we strolled through the city in small groups, treated ourselves to ice cream, and took the bus back to our accommodation.

Those who were not on the excursion enjoyed a vacation day with a late breakfast and went swimming in the sea or the pool.

The last evening at the campsite started with a shared pizza dinner and hardly anyone went to bed early :)
