Laguna Route - 400 km corrugated road

Lofalitsidwa: 25.11.2017

The Laguna Route followed the Salar Adventure. Our tour guide promised: 450 kilometers of miserable road, including washboard tracks and off-road sections. What could be better 😊. The first 50 kilometers were a real torture for Maggi. He had to climb over huge rocks and we were seriously worried if he would survive the next 400 kilometers unscathed. Fortunately, the next sections of the route were more pleasant, now he only had to deal with washboard roads and sandy ground.

We spent the first night at Laguna Honda, at an altitude of about 4,200 meters. The next day we reached the highlight of the Laguna Route, Laguna Colorada. Depending on the wind direction and sunlight, the 60-square-kilometer lagoon changes its color. The palette ranges from dark red to green to jet black. Absolutely fascinating. Due to the altitude and the icy wind, the hike was limited to a minimum 😊. Maggi and Mani also felt the effects of the altitude, it took them some time to get going the next morning. The smoke signals they produced were out of this world.
The first stop of the day was the Sol de Manana Geyser at an altitude of 4,850 meters. The geyser field was nice, but no comparison to the Geysir del Tatio in Chile. Instead, there were bubbling mud pools here, very amusing.
We still hadn't had enough of the altitude, so we headed to the Bolivian customs station at a dizzying 5,030 meters. The customs formalities were done in no time and we headed to Laguna Blanca and Verde.
These were located at an almost relaxed 4,350 meters. But now we had really had enough of the altitude and decided spontaneously to drive to San Pedro de Atacama, Chile. There, the four of us celebrated our successful Laguna "Expedition" with Pisco Sours.
