Honduras - Utila

Lofalitsidwa: 03.11.2016

After 2 boat rides, 2 bus rides and another transfer to a smaller car, we reached our next and only destination in Honduras after many new and contrasting images of slums and new development areas, bad and excellent roads, sugarcane, banana and pineapple plantations... the small island of Utila. Everything here revolves around diving! So that was our plan too. There's simply not much else to do in this place. Utila belongs to the Bay Islands group and is located off the coast of Honduras in the Caribbean Sea. As the world's second largest barrier reef stretches here, it is a Mecca for all diving enthusiasts... and also the world's cheapest diving spot. There is only one place on the island, Utila Town. The mentality here is a mix of British-Caribbean-Honduran flair. Once discovered by Columbus, occupied by the Spaniards, besieged by British pirates like Henry Morgan, and today part of Honduras.

Currently, it is still low season here and the weather is unpredictable. It has rained a lot, which is not so important for diving... you get wet anyway ;-) but it has slightly affected the underwater visibility. Nevertheless, very worthwhile!

So we relaxed and enjoyed some leisurely days... and once again stayed longer than planned. As a conclusion, we were able to feel a bit like Robinson Crusoe on "Water Cay", one of the lonely small islands around...
