Even more thunderstorms and 66L of rain in one day...

E phatlaladitšwe: 21.05.2024

Yesterday I climbed from Petrovo Brdo to Crna Prst (1835m), only to descend again straight away and take a rest day in the valley, where I can spend the day in a dry room with a thunderstorm and a constant rain warning. Unfortunately the weather forecast has thrown me a little off schedule. Crna Prst (pronounced: Tschirna Pirst) is the first high peak on a mountain ridge, which is the most beautiful but also most demanding stage of the Via Alpina in Slovenia. Unfortunately I can only climb the very exposed ridge without a thunderstorm and with reasonably good visibility. And... It's a 20km ridge hike with 1000m of ascent and 1300m of descent! A long and difficult stage. There is a bivouac in between, after the first 12km, which offers a little consolation, because there are long stretches without shelter and no way of descending.

If the weather forecast stays the same, I'll try to cross the ridge on Thursday. But it's constantly changing and unfortunately not for the better.

And after being up there and seeing how much snow is still at 2500m, I assume that I won't be able to pass part of the Via Alpina that goes over 2500m. I left my microspikes and ice axe at home and putting myself in a situation where I need both is not something I would do alone (anymore). So I hope that at least the path from the Dom na Komni hut, the only one open here at this time of year (at 1500m), to Trente is clear and that I can get over the 2000m peaks there. Otherwise I will have to descend to Ukanc again and take the train home in Bohinjdka Bistrica. Then my hike would end here. But it doesn't feel like that at the moment and I hope that I can make it to Austria, even if I have to detour a stage... I'll make up for that next time...
