Asado - pure meat enjoyment

E phatlaladitšwe: 19.09.2016

Just the word Asado makes my mouth water, and as a meat lover, I can't miss this delicious national dish in Uruguay. From Chorizo (spicy sausage) to Lomo (fillet) and Asado de Tira (short ribs), I've tried almost everything. I struggle with the innards, but they are very popular here. Asado originated with the Gauchos, and almost everything the cow has to offer goes on the grill. In Montevideo, there are numerous opportunities to enjoy delicious steaks and meat specialties, and here are my three personal recommendations.

#1 Mercado del Puerto

The harbor market is still number one for me. The rustic atmosphere of the market hall radiates coziness and invites you to linger. Huge grills, crackling coals, and the smell of delicious grilled meat fill the air. Even vegetarians have been known to succumb here. Mercado del Puerto is a magnet for visitors, but it is also very popular with the locals. Many Montevideoans come here to eat on weekends and at Christmas. With the increasing number of tourists, prices have also gone up, and the harbor market is no longer one of the cheap options in Montevideo. Nevertheless, I always enjoy coming here because I really like the harbor market as a whole package.

#2 Pellicer Restaurant in Mercado Agricola

Not far from the Palacio Legislativo is Mercado Agricola. For decades, the former agricultural market was Montevideo's main supply center for fruits and vegetables. The restored market hall has been declared a national monument and is the modern counterpart to the harbor market. Various shops have settled here and offer a variety of options. A visit is worthwhile, as you can sample ice cream specialties and craft beer from Uruguay and, of course, enjoy delicious steak. The Pellicer restaurant is not to be missed. You will come across it directly during your walk and recognize it by the large rotisserie.

#3 Garcia Restaurant in Carrasco

In its origins, Carrasco was a seaside resort, and even today, you feel like you're outside the city in this noble district. There is a small center with restaurants, boutiques, art galleries, and supermarkets. Garcia restaurant is located on Avenida Alfredo Arocena and is within walking distance of the impressive Carrasco Hotel and Casino. The cozy atmosphere and excellent cuisine regularly attract public figures. World footballers like Diego Forlan, Edinson Cavani, and Luis Suarez often come here to eat. But even Hollywood stars like Keanu Reeves have already been spoiled culinary at Garcia.
