Day 93 - Boat Tour & Newquay

E phatlaladitšwe: 03.07.2019

Hi everyone,

This morning the sun was actually shining when we woke up!

We took care of a few things and in the afternoon we made our way to 'Torquay'. There is a bay there called 'Seal Cove'. Allegedly there are always seals there and various diving operators visit this spot.

After a 1.5-hour drive, we arrived in the town. We wanted to see how close you can get with a car, so we entered Seal Cove as the destination. As we found out, the road there was not really meant for campers... It was so narrow that you couldn't pass any other vehicle, the bushes brushed against the sides, and it was impossible to make a turn! Luckily, towards the end of the road, it became slightly wider and we were able park the camper on the side of the road. We walked down to the sea and explored the area. Once again, we climbed over rocks and tried to reach the spot on foot. However, about 500 meters away from the destination, we couldn't go any further. We sat down and observed a jellyfish helplessly floating on the surface. Then we actually saw a seal! I can be quite stubborn when I set my mind to something, and after seeing it, it was clear: I WANT TO GO THERE!

We couldn't carry the boat all the way, so we looked for a suitable place to launch it. Kevin found one, but it was 4.5 kilometers away. It wouldn't normally be a long distance, but with the rough waves, it would take us an hour each way! But never mind, we just had to do it :).

We got everything ready and started. After the first wave washed into our boat and after maybe fumbling around a bit until we were finally in the water, we even managed to put a smile on the face of a grumpy observer. After we had done it and sailed away, he waved to us. At first, the sea was relatively calm, but then we entered a stormy passage. It went up and down, and at times the boat jumped from wave to wave. But luckily, the passage wasn't long.

When we reached the destination, there was nothing there! No seal, nothing...

So, back we go... Suddenly, the engine stopped. The fuel was empty! We were still too far away to row back! We had a small reserve left, but would it be enough? By now, it was getting quite cold and we simply hoped to make it back without rowing. Just before we reached the destination, the engine stopped again! Okay, from here on we could row... Kevin shook the tank a bit and tried to get the engine running again - success!!

We made it to the beach where our camper was parked. After packing everything up, we continued on our way. We had another two hours of driving ahead of us until we reached Newquay. Tomorrow the trip to the sharks will take place there! Awesome!

We arrived at our location for today at 11:15 pm. Kevin made us some delicious Pepitos! But now it's time to call it a day - tomorrow is an early start :).

The pictures will be available tomorrow as usual, and we hope for your understanding ;).

See you tomorrow!
