Day off! Or: Days off!
Today our day started very early. The alarm clock rang at 4:30 a.m. because the tuk tuk was supposed to come at 5:15 a.m. and take us to the clinic. Once there, we - together with the three other trainees and one of the helpers - changed to Dr. Samantha Kumara's car. So eight of us drove 3 hours to Polonnaruwa in a car that was definitely designed for fewer people.
When we arrived there, the six of us girls were dropped off and got tickets for the Ancient City. There are many very well-preserved ruins including temples that were built around 1150 AD.
At around 1 p.m., the three of us now organized an Uber that would take us to our destination for the next 3 days: Trincomalee! And our Uber driver was just a sweetheart! He stopped several times and even turned around to show us free-roaming elephants.
As a small snack he bought us curd with honey. This is a type of yogurt but made from buffalo milk. A specialty that is only sold fresh in small clay pots on the side of the road in this small village. And he also told us a little bit about the country as part of his language skills.
After traveling all day in what felt like 40°C, arriving at the sea was a welcome refreshment. At the end of the day we sat down in a small restaurant right on the beach, where not only was the owner lovely, but the rice and curry was also the best we have eaten in Sri Lanka so far!
And now, after 6 pm on your feet: have a good night!
