Providencia

E phatlaladitšwe: 09.03.2020

When it came to the planning of Colombia in Brazil and we felt the first real travel fatigue, we decided to make a detour to San Andres and Providencia. The two islands belong politically to Colombia, but geographically they are more in line with Nicaragua.
So we flew from Medellin to San Andres. We spent three nights there and were surprised that it was so touristy. But with a tip we found a beautiful beach outside that wasn't crowded.
On March 1st, we flew to Providencia for a week with a propeller plane along with 18 other people.
From the airplane window, you could only imagine the beauty behind it: crystal clear blue water and juicy green hills.
For this time, we treated ourselves to a hotel right on the beach with a view of the sunset and rented a scooter.

We quickly realized that we had arrived in a small paradise in the middle of the Caribbean, where there is not much tourism, and this made our pulse race.
The island is not very big and has 7000 inhabitants. After just 17 km, you are already back at the same point on the island and have circled it once.

We spent the week on Providencia discovering island life, enjoying the sun, water and beaches, and going on some excursions.

One day we hiked to the neighboring island of Santa Catalina, which is accessed by a wooden bridge called 'the lovers lane'. We saw Morgans Head, a rock formation by Captain Morgan, who was a pirate on Providencia. You could also snorkel on Santa Catalina because the coast was a bit rocky and the water was crystal clear.

But an absolute highlight was surely Crab Cay. We rented a kayak for a day and paddled out to this island. With every paddle stroke, the water became clearer and bluer. On the island, we learned that it is the third largest reef in the world with a distance of 32 km. So we not only had an amazing view from the highest point, but also transparent blue water for swimming and snorkeling. What an experience that once again made us marvel at how unique nature can be.

Silvio also took the opportunity to discover the underwater world while diving and now has one more shark in his circle of friends.
During this time, Carla hiked to the highest point of the island - the Peak at 360 m.

We leave Providencia with a huge smile on our faces and still sand between our toes. Wonderful to have visited this island and we will leave a little piece of our heart at this dreamlike place that we will never forget.
