China Town, Lady Liberty and Ellis Island

E phatlaladitšwe: 09.07.2016

The day started this time only at noon, as we had to catch up on some sleep. That's why it made sense to first go to Chinatown to eat. Taste-wise, it was really great, and with somewhat unusual, traditional Chinese music in a small park, the ambiance was also quite okay. It's just a bit unusual for us to see whole cooked ducks and chickens hanging in the restaurants. After eating, we took the subway again to the Liberty Island Ferry, which took us to the Statue of Liberty. Interestingly, it should be mentioned that before every major sightseeing spot, you have to go through a security check like at the airport. After visiting Liberty Island, the ferry went directly to Ellis Island. It is an island right next to Liberty Island, where immigrants from Europe and around the world arrived and were registered in the past. The former registration building is now used as a museum. During the walk on this island, which is two-thirds filled, we noticed that all the flags were flying at half-mast. Upon inquiry, we later learned from Nancy that there were again two (unnecessary) deadly shootings by police officers against black people, and nationwide, including here in NYC, protests were launched with the motto 'black lives matter'. During one of these peaceful protests in Dallas (Texas), there was a sniper attack by a black person, who apparently killed 4 police officers and injured several others...

This moved us to spend the evening at home in front of the TV with a few American beers and watch the news, even though we had to struggle with two bottles each with the opener to realize that the bottle caps here work like a screw cap. :D
