On Friday (August 25th, 2023) we took the bus from Kandy to Ella. We actually wanted to take this route by train because the train passes through tea plantations and the route is known for its beauty. Since every travel guide recommends this route, the train is fully booked two weeks in advance. Because we didn't get train tickets, we decided to travel the route on the way back. Most tourists travel in the same direction, so we got tickets for the opposite direction without any difficulty.
Ella is located in the mountains in the Central Province of Sri Lanka and is known for its numerous tea plantations. There are also many beautiful hiking trails here.
Yesterday we looked at the “Nine Arch Bridge”. This railway bridge was built by the British and is 91 meters long. What is particularly exciting is that the train route is walked by both locals and tourists. This is not dangerous because the trains do not move fast and you can hear them from a distance because they are very loud. We used the railway line to first see a waterfall and then walk into town. It's a crazy feeling to walk five kilometers on tracks. The panorama was beautiful!
Today we got up early again to see the sunrise. To do this we had to hike up a mountain in the dark. From "Little Adams Peak" you have a fantastic view of the sunrise and the surrounding landscape. In contrast to Sigiriya, no elephants live here, so we were able to hike in the dark without any worries.
Tomorrow we're going to the coast for five days before we return to Ella for another night for the aforementioned train journey.
