We actually thought we had seen enough waterfalls for the next few years, especially since we had a formidable specimen all to ourselves at our accommodation. One that would attract hundreds of buses every day throughout the rest of Europe... but then... GULLFOSS... a magnificent, incomparable giant of water that breaks three times and even under a perpetual rainbow. The relatively many tourists can't diminish that.
Then, because of the sunshine, the geysers again. Several times every hour... what a fascinating spectacle, not knowing exactly when, only that it will happen, a fountain-like discharge of hot water reaching heights of up to 20m. We marvel and enjoy the show and the beautiful weather. Again and again.
Today is an insanely great, and much-needed sunny day and according to the weather forecast, it will stay that way for a while.
Good, because the highland adventure awaits us. We want to drive into Landmannalaugar, a so-called F-route, which is actually not possible with our car, and technically not even allowed. Nonsense... We bump through incredible landscapes and are alone the whole time. Amazing what the 3-ton load with standard tires and without any off-road gadgets can handle.
Then it gets exciting, because we have to (finally) drive through water. We check the ford and decide to do it - of course, what else? Turn around? Not as long as we can still see through! We continue and we will notice that the previous water crossings were rather harmless compared to the one that is coming up. In order to reach our camp, we have to drive through water that is almost knee-deep... what to do? Turn around? Never! Not as long as... oh we already had that. We find a "suitable" track and make it. The shouting in the car and the adrenaline level is indescribable. We spend the well-deserved evening at one of the most unusual places that you can find, at least in Europe, but maybe also in the whole world. An incredible, 20m high lava tongue that has decided to abruptly end after many kilometers, surrounded by colorful mountains, hissing fields, a hot! river where people bathe and chat with the locals until two in the morning, a plateau with endless, intertwined watercourses - we can't think of anything that could top this scenery. Fits perfectly: BEER and GRILL MEAT!
