Rocinha Favela

E phatlaladitšwe: 05.02.2020

One of the infamous favelas brings us closer to Carlos, who has been living here since childhood. Since 2008, the government has been trying to decriminalize the neighborhoods that were once dominated by criminal organizations. This has largely been successful, especially since the 2014 World Cup and the 2016 Olympics. There are already hostels in some favelas, and many can be entered without a guide. However, this is not recommended at night, but the same applies to other areas of the city. Life is still difficult for the favela residents. The government has forgotten them, says Carlos. While entrance areas have been colorfully renovated and expensive arch bridges have been built, life behind them is still cramped and impoverished. Our tour through this labyrinth-like Rocinha favela is impressively oppressive.
