For the last month of our adventure, we are heading to Sweden. Since our Bikebear is still limping, we rent a VW Ocean from Roadsurfer with a roof tent, heating, outdoor shower, and other gadgets. It's a bit tight, but thanks to the clever interior design, it's easy for us to settle in.
Our first longer stop is in Valdemarsvik, about 2 hours south of Stockholm. We have arranged to meet Eva there to explore the islands off the mainland for three days.
Since there will be no infrastructure along the way, we need to prepare well. We read wind and weather reports, create a menu plan, estimate our water needs, and write down the azimuth of our journey using a compass and nautical chart.
We load up two kayaks and set sail. Late summer is showing its best side. The smooth rocks invite us to take swimming breaks. We rarely encounter other people. Instead, from our kayaks, we can observe eagles, cormorants, and even a few deer that have to spend the summer on the islands until the water between the islands freezes again and they can move on.
