Tag 63: Golden Circle Tour 2.0

E phatlaladitšwe: 29.09.2023

Post for September 26th

Yesterday evening around half past ten Inveldur came to me and said that a woman (25) was currently working on the neighboring farm and was going on the Golden Circle Tour today and asked if I would like to come with her. Since I didn't have anything planned today anyway, I said yes. However, the woman - Beata - wanted to leave at half past eight, so my alarm went off at seven in the morning.

With your car we first went to the Kerid crater. Since she comes from Poland, we spoke in English. It was kind of tiring having to constantly think about how best to formulate sentences so that the other person understands what you mean, but it was also funny because we both couldn't think of some words and then had to guess what was meant.

After a little more than an hour we arrived at the crater. The only problem: the weather. It rained the whole time and the wind wasn't exactly light either. But since we were both well equipped with rain jackets and pants, it wasn't as bad. During the bus tour I took from Reykjavik we only had about twenty minutes to see the crater, but today we took about an hour to take lots of photos.

On the way we made a spontaneous stop at a lake in the middle of nowhere. We drove past the first parking spots because we weren't sure if it was worth it, but then we stopped and took some really nice photos.

Afterwards we drove to the gap between the tectonic plates. We also took a lot more time there than I had on the bus ride and we even got to see a waterfall not far from one of the other parking lots. The scenery was really beautiful and the wooden paths between the trees were truly magical.

Then we went to a waterfall -Brúgafoss-, which the bus tour had missed. I have to say, the waterfall was a lot nicer than Gullfoss. The water was sometimes completely light blue and the surroundings were also really beautiful.

Then we drove to the geysers and looked around. To be honest, that was a little boring for me because I had already seen the geysers and there isn't necessarily much else to see there.

Back in the car we thought about whether we should go somewhere else or go home, but since it was already six o'clock and the way back was a little over an hour and neither of us had slept that much, we decided then drove back.

To be honest, the trip was pretty fun, even though I had to speak English the whole time. It was nice to meet someone new and I always find it interesting why people are here. With Beata it was because she studied geology, then worked as a masseuse for a while and it became too boring for her. She constantly saw posts about Iceland on Instagram and as a geology student, Iceland is of course much more interesting. In the morning I really regretted saying yes, especially when my alarm went off, but looking back it was a really nice day.

See you then

Julia
