Shenandoah National Park is a narrow corridor, approximately 800 square kilometers, in the southern Appalachians in Virginia. The street “Skyline Drive” runs through the entire length of the park. It was built in the 1930s (the project idea arose as a job creation measure during the global economic crisis from 1928). Numerous viewing points offer great views of the forested regions and surrounding populated areas. The Appalachian Trail long-distance hiking trail also runs through the park. During a hike I walk a (short) section of this famous hiking trail. In some places you can see the Shenandoah River meandering through the landscape.
A quick internet search reveals that there are countless versions of the song Shenandoah. And it also turns out that even a well-intentioned explanatory video is met with nasty comments. However, most of the comments are benevolent and informative.
song lyricsVersion by Stephen White
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you,
Away, you rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I long to see you,
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.
Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Away, you rolling river
Oh Shenandoah, I love your daughter
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.
Oh, Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you,
Away, you rolling river
Oh, Shenandoah, I'm bound to leave you,
Away, I'm bound away, across the wide Missouri.
