Day 39: Day of rest in Frankfurt

E phatlaladitšwe: 21.08.2023

Sunday, 20th of August 2023. 35 years ago, we got married in a church. So today, we're taking it easy. After a hearty breakfast, complemented by a little surprise from the hotel, we prepare ourselves for the heat in Frankfurt. At 11 o'clock, we have a city tour booked under the motto 'Old Town yesterday and today'. The tour guide did a great job. The highlight was the 'Golden Scales', which now houses a cafe. We visited the cafe afterwards to try a 'Frankfurter Kranz' cake. It is said to be a replica of the imperial crown, with the croquant representing the gold and the cherries representing the diamonds. Once again, we learned something new. Traveling broadens the mind. In the same building is the Friedrich Stoltze Museum, the poet of Frankfurt and, according to the tour guide, even more popular than Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. Stoltze was present at the Paulskirche in 1848, when the Germans tried democracy for the first time. Highly interesting. Of course, we also visited the Paulskirche, which plays a role every year during the award ceremony of the German Book Trade Peace Prize.
To relax, we go to the Main riverbank and find a spot in the shade to eat something. It's simply beautiful to sit there.
To end the day, we wanted to go to a rooftop bar, but they are all closed tonight. So, we'll admire the skyline from our panoramic window at the Maritim Hotel and then take a walk by the Main river again.
