Why Lapland???
A legitimate question – at least for the husband.
"It's cold there... And it's snowing... It's dark... Did I mention it's cold??"
My son and I see it differently:
“Snow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!”
I also dream of seeing the Northern Lights ONCE in my life. The chances of this are definitely better in winter, but with daytime temperatures of -20 degrees my husband definitely goes on strike.
Compromise: we're flying during the Easter holidays! At the end of March it's not so cold anymore, the days are longer (bad for the northern lights) and hopefully the weather will be consistent. I'll also lure him with skiing and a snowmobile tour. At some point he'll be outvoted and give in.
We're flying to Lapland! Yay!
It should be 2 weeks.
After a long comparison and search for the best flight, I decided that we would fly to Helsinki on a Friday evening, spend the night there and then fly on to Rovaniemi the next morning. The alternative would have been to fly on Saturday without an overnight stay and arrive in Rovaniemi in the middle of the night after a 6-hour transit in Helsinki. We thought that was stupid and the flight on Friday was even cheaper. Perfect!
By the way, we are flying with Finnair! I didn't really have any alternative offers and Lufthansa was not going to be the one to fly with due to the strike...
I plan several days of skiing in different ski resorts, book a snowmobile tour and a husky sleigh tour, and of course the standard tourist highlights like Santa Claus Village are also on the program. We'll do the rest "freestyle" depending on the weather, mood and desire.
In the end there will be 2 more days in Helsinki.
Done! Booked! Let's go!
