The plan was to go hiking on the Montagne Sainte-Victoire. But we have already walked enough on this trip, so we spontaneously decide to change our plans and go on a trip to the sea. The itinerary includes the two coastal towns of La Ciotat and Cassis, connected by the legendary coastal road 'Corniche des Crêtes'.
La Ciotat offers a colorful mix of fishing village, beach, and shipyard facilities. And here stands the oldest cinema in the world, where cinema history was made! The train station of La Ciotat served the Lumière brothers in 1895 as the first film location ever, where they filmed the entry of a train. In the newly opened Eden Théâtre in 1889, they showed their films.
The Corniche des Crêtes offers spectacular views over the cliffs down to the sea and, depending on the location, also over La Ciotat and Cassis. A detour that is definitely worth it!
Cassis is one of the main attractions on the coast between Marseille and Toulon. Despite its proximity to the major southern French cities, Cassis has largely preserved its charm. In Cassis, a popular leisure activity is also invented: the game of Pétanque.
