Happy Waitangi Day! Today is apparently New Zealand's national holiday. We're not exactly sure how the New Zealanders celebrate this day - but there's already a lot going on at the lake right in front of our camper. This doesn't bother us at all, on the contrary, we enjoy the free show for breakfast from jetski rowdies, waveboarders and tube sliders!

We continue along the west coast and the Surfers Highway heading south, passing the mighty Mount Taranaki (volcano), which is known as a winter sports paradise in winter. However, since we have bad weather for once, we hardly see anything of the volcano and the surfer beaches don't tempt us to go to the sea, because the west coast is currently very rough and windy. We only make a short stop in Opunake, where we have a nice view of the wavy sea from the cliff - strong gusts of wind almost blow us off the lookout tower, so we continue to cruise in our cozy camper until Waverley, where we head for a great and cheap campsite near the beach - and still a bit protected from the wind. With nice neighbors and once again without internet reception, which is why you had to wait a bit for the next update ;-) But we had plenty of time to cook and read our Lord of the Rings books!
