Today was the last day in San Francisco and it was packed with a diverse program.
Although we were tight on time, we arrived at Pier 33 on time this morning. Since we were running a bit late, we had to park at the most expensive parking lot we've ever used in America (I can only say 2 hours for $37). Even Düsseldorf doesn't have these prices. But we had no other choice and at least it was right in front of the entrance to the Alcatraz ferry.
Because our first destination today was about 1.5 kilometers from San Francisco and in the middle of the Pacific.
We definitely didn't want to miss the most famous prison in the world, so we booked our tickets in advance a few days ago. After about 12 minutes of a comfortable ferry ride, we reached THE ROCK and automatically got a strange feeling. It's somewhat eerie to know that the worst of the worst used to be here, but we weren't intimidated and started the grand audio tour through the prison. It was super interesting and with the headphones, which always told us where to walk next and then spewed out new stories, it felt like being in an old movie.
We had a different expectation for this tour and were pleasantly surprised how much fun a museum visit can be.
After about 2 hours, we were glad to leave the island, which was not possible for the inmates back then. The island is really small and the cells in which all the offenders sat were not much bigger than a guest toilet J
So, off to the ferry and back to the car, with which we then drove over the Golden Gate Bridge towards MUIR Woods. A few miles out of the city and you're in the green. The forests were really beautiful and the giant redwood trees were truly impressive! It makes you feel quite small standing in front of them. On the way back, we stopped at MUIR Beach, so today was our last time seeing a real beach because our next few days will be spent inland.
So BYE BYE ocean and back towards SF. But before we drove back to the city over the Golden Gate Bridge, we first went up to the Marin Headlands right before the bridge. From up there we had the most spectacular view of the bridge and the city in the background. The weather played along again today and gave us perfect conditions for taking photos.
Back in San Francisco, we parked our car at the motel, quickly changed our clothes, and got ready for the best part of the day.
Today, we walked to 11th Street and headed to the OASIS Theater.
BUFFY-THE VAMPIRE SLAYER with Drag Queens was on the program today. We booked the tickets a few days ago when we happened to see a poster for it.
What a coincidence that such a show from the famous vampire series is happening right here.
When we entered the theater, it was buzzing with old Buffy fans, and we couldn't help but smile, knowing that there are still many like-minded people out there who loved this series as much as we did back then.
The show was mega funny and we still have muscle soreness from laughing so much because at times we just couldn't handle it anymore :D
After way too many drinks and a super fun show, we chatted a bit with the actors and took some souvenir photos. But see for yourself J
In a good mood and a little tipsy, we stumbled all the way back to the motel.
You have to say that SF is not a particularly beautiful city in some areas at night.
We initially had different expectations for this city and probably got unlucky with the accommodation, but we never really felt 100% comfortable here from the beginning. The city is really beautiful and offers a lot of sights, but the number of poor and especially homeless people here is extremely high. Especially in our neighborhood, you could hardly set foot on the street after dark and there were constant sirens and screams.
That really left a bitter taste in our mouths. But we don't want to discourage you from visiting San Francisco yourself because the city has many beautiful sides and interesting sights, but we definitely liked San Diego better J
Tomorrow is a new day and we will slowly make our way back to Las Vegas, from where we will fly back home on Sunday.
But before we head back home, we still have some adventures ahead of us.
Good night!!!
