Day 29: More Sea

The day started with an announcement at quarter to seven. Some of us were more rested than others as we packed up our belongings and retrieved our backpacks from the lockers, which were at least free of charge.

At nearly eight o'clock, we finally arrived at the ferry terminal in Hirtshals, which is located just to the left of the middle of nowhere. While the sports enthusiasts were still in their beds or enjoying breakfast, we boarded an overpriced bus to the next train station, where we waited in the drizzle for the train out of the wilderness.

In total, we covered today's distance under cloudy skies with two buses, four trains, and a ferry. We finally arrived in Fanø, a small Danish island, around 3:00 p.m.

We were warmly welcomed by our host here. Our lovely room is located on the top floor of an old brick house. After greeting the dog and taking a short rest, we set out to explore the island.

First, we took a short walk along the beach, where the wind blew forcefully against us and we took off our shoes and socks. The water was cold, but the sand was soft and pleasant, and the mudflats were indeed muddy. We collected rocks and shells, observed crabs, walked out onto a pier, and watched the ferries arrive and depart. It was like a bit of vacation with the sea and sandy beach all over again.

Finally, we shook off the sand from our feet and went to find a supermarket to get dinner and breakfast one last time. On our way back, we walked through the beautiful town of Nordby with its small, thatched brick houses.

Back at the accommodation, we had salad and relaxed for a bit while updating our blog posts. It's slowly sinking in that the last night of our trip is approaching - a mix of melancholy and excitement for home is spreading.
