Our accommodation in Jade City (a cabin right by a lake) was quite lovely, but it had two major flaws: it wasn't heated and it had an outdoor toilet. In the middle of the forest in bear country, and with temperatures of 10°C during the day and nighttime frost, we found the latter less appealing...
However, after surviving this night as well, we continued on the Alaska Highway with some smaller stops towards Whitehorse. Once we arrived, we first visited the tourist information to find out what else we could do with the rest of the day. In our conversation, we also received the information that the USA has already closed the border crossing on the Top Of The World Highway - 2 weeks earlier than usual. Darn, that's where we wanted to go to reach Dawson City. Now we need a Plan B! Luckily, we found one shortly after: skip the overnight stay in Beaver Creek, stay an extra night in Whitehorse, and the following day take the direct route - the Klondike Highway - to Dawson City.
But we are also stubborn: on this 'extra' day, we are driving roughly the same route as originally planned: the Alaska Highway to Haines Junction, from there a bit on the Haines Road (amazing scenery), and then another stretch on the Alaska Highway northwards (today our wildlife spot - a grizzly bear by the roadside, a black bear, and a few elk). However, in the end, we have to go all the way back to Whitehorse...
