Ausflug in die Blue Mountains

You can easily and comfortably reach the Blue Mountains or, more precisely, the town of Katoomba from Sydney by train in 2 hours. The Blue Mountains are so called because the leaves of the eucalyptus trees evaporate the essential eucalyptus oil, creating a fine mist over the mountains. This results in a blue coloration due to a specific scattering of light.

It was already not very warm in Sydney, but here in the mountains it was even colder, about 7-10 degrees Celsius during the day and only 1 degree Celsius in the evening. Since I was not prepared clothing-wise for such temperatures, I had to layer up and wear everything I had and also bought a hat at Aldi.

From Katoomba, you can embark on a variety of hikes into the valley with waterfalls and rivers, or along the cliffs to amazing viewpoints. And once you leave behind the popular viewpoints crowded with Asian tourists, you'll be pretty much alone on the trails during this time of the year.
