Trip to Hiriketiya - Blue Beach

Some time ago, I heard about a beautiful beach that is located southeast of Matara.

After Louise and I went surfing in Madiha in the morning, she rented a scooter and offered to accompany me to Hiriketiya. Great Idea!

So we set off in the blazing midday sun and 35 degrees Celsius. We thought we would sweat anyway.

Every now and then, on the way to Hiriketiya, we come across a beautiful beach, unfortunately not suitable for surfing, which of course makes it less appealing to us.

Hiriketiya's secluded little bay is somewhat hidden but easily accessible. Here, a small bay with a sandy beach and turquoise water stretches out, which could be taken from a picture book.

If it weren't for the 100 people bustling on the beach, you could think you've found paradise.

What was once a hidden gem, where only a few people got lost, is now unfortunately overcrowded with sunbathing travelers, absolute beginners in surfing, and small bars and bistros designed for tourists.

Further down the beach, there is a wonderful left wave that can be surfed.

Unfortunately, Louise and I didn't have our surfboards with us. But the urge was definitely there to jump into the water for a short while.

After treating ourselves to a pineapple juice and some rest, and laughing at some attempts by surfing newbies from time to time - I know, shame on me, but sometimes it's just too amusing - we headed back.

Now the moment of true farewell had come. With a heavy heart, I had to say goodbye to my favorite surf companion Louise. Safe travel my dear! Have fun at the Maldives - I'm not jealous at all!

Both of us have decided to meet somewhere, somehow, and someday for surfing.

To end the evening, there was a short sunset surf before dinner, and it was time to go to bed. Because tomorrow, the first surf coaching is scheduled, and there is still a lot to improve.

Hang loose 🤙🏼
