Arriving on the South Island, it naturally rains to welcome us. How could it be otherwise? :-D well, the weather is supposed to be good for the next few days, so let's overlook that.
The ferry ride took 3.5 hours and we arrived around 6:30 pm. Getting a spot at a free campsite at this time? Almost impossible, at least in a city.
There is a free spot at Evans Bay right by the harbor in Wellington, there are toilets, although the cars are all parked very close together, it's sufficient.
Of course, we didn't get a spot there and had to look for something else... unfortunately, this seemed nearly impossible and we just didn't feel like spending 40 dollars per person per night for a caravan park...
In the end, we stopped somewhere where we probably weren't allowed to camp, but everything turned out fine. We were at a bay and despite the rain, Mike went fishing. The night was terrible, wannabe car tuners kept coming to the bay and were playing loud music in the middle of the night :(. We woke up at 5:30 am and drove to Evans Bay and snagged a spot, where we were able to sleep a few more hours.
On our first day in Wellington, we explored the city on foot. It's already 3.5 km one way from the campsite and by the end of the day, we had logged nearly 16 km on my Fitbit watch :-D. We really like Wellington, it's a beautiful city by the water and, I don't know, we just feel really comfortable here at the moment.
In the evening, we went to the Saturday Night Markets and had delicious food.
