Playa del Carmen, Mexico

We drove to the Dallas airport in a Dodge Ram. The handover of the vehicle went smoothly. The final bill clarified the actual costs. Accounting in the USA is a real challenge for foreigners. Despite careful study, we could not figure out which deductions and additions would be included in the end. A tax must be included everywhere. In the end, you never pay what was initially listed as the total. Although we are aware of this, we still find it chaotic and annoying. This is where our Swiss 'Bünzli' comes out.

After a three-hour flight, our plane landed safely in Cancun. At the airport, we inquired about the buses to Playa del Carmen and got lucky. Just a few minutes later, the bus started moving. The journey lasted almost an hour. We then took a taxi to our accommodation. The charming Airbnb was decorated in Mexican style and we immediately felt at home in our four walls.

Over the next three days, we visited the beach and enjoyed the good food and wonderful margaritas. Everything revolves around the Quinta Avenida (Fifth Avenue). The hundreds of restaurants, bars, souvenir and shops make the stay a pleasant experience. In the evening, as the temperature slowly drops, the Mexicans come to life - dancing and singing are the order of the day. We enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and were also very happy to be here in the off-season. It must be crazy busy here in the tourist season! Everything is geared towards tourism - the whole region blossomed thanks to tourism in the early 21st century. In 1992, there were only 10,500 inhabitants in Playa del Carmen, but by 2009 there were already 162,500 people. Like everywhere else in the world, tourism is both a curse and a blessing. The island of Cozumel also played a significant role in the boom. It is located about 20 minutes away from Playa del Carmen and is known for its beautiful sandy beaches.

After three days of sun, beach, and delicious Mexican food, we are now headed inland. We are looking forward to the Maya ruins and the jungle in Palenque.
