Sukhothai

Diterbitkan: 17.12.2018

I wanted to visit Sukhothai because of its historical significance and many recommendations. It is located in the middle of Thailand and is an archaeological and historical site with temple ruins. Sukhothai was a powerful dynasty from the 13th to 15th centuries after our reckoning. The areas of influence extended to Myanmar and Laos. The Sukhothai period is considered the pinnacle of Thai art history. During this time, one of the kings established the Thai script (today's Thai script has 74 letters!). After that, it was succeeded by Ayutthaya as a kingdom.
So that was a very brief historical overview ;)
What did I experience? Together with the world traveler Anna, whom I met when getting off the bus, I explored the impressive historical park by bike and watched the sunrise at the 700-year-old temples. Getting up early wasn't that bad, but unfortunately, the sunrise was a disappointment because it was heavily cloudy. Of course, I would have liked to take a cheesy photo with my good camera ;) Nevertheless, it was atmospheric to be there without any people, only with our new dog friend.
Then the bike path led us to a small authentic village with rice fields (see below) within the park. The locals were so sweet and warmly greeted us every time we passed by.
Culinarily, Sukhothai was the first and only disappointment on the entire trip to Thailand, and I also met the first really unfriendly Thai people in the restaurants. Overall, I liked Sukhothai extremely well: few tourists, very authentic, special atmosphere to climb around the ancient ruins.

Then Esther also arrived, and we traveled back to Bangkok together.
The last days are coming up, and I'm really looking forward to being home...

Here are my photos from Sukhothai:

Found a new friend for that, though!

Even in the remotest ruins, people pray!
Biking (if you can even call it that) with Anna through a quaint village, where no other tourists get lost and you are greeted with smiles and friendly admiration.

Spirit house (San Phra Phum) found in front of almost every house in Thailand. This is to appease the earth spirits, who, according to belief, are the true owners of the property and give them food and drink as an offering. If the real house is enlarged/rebuilt, the spirit house must also be enlarged to not anger the earth spirits.
