Panoramic drive through the Lake District and Keswick
Diterbitkan: 04.08.2024
To explore the landscape of the Lake District, we wanted to take a panoramic drive today, which would lead us through small villages and passes.
But first, we made a stop at the Castlerigg Stone Circle.
The stone circle was probably erected around 4500 years ago and likely served ritual purposes.
Today, the freely accessible site was well filled with tourists.
We continued through the narrow streets towards Keswick. However, we did not stop in the town yet, but drove directly on the B5292.
The roads were not particularly wide, but even a bus was following us over the 318-meter-high Whinlatter Pass.
Only when we turned onto the B5289 did it have free passage again.
For us, the roads became even narrower, but the view became more beautiful.
The road mostly offered space for only one vehicle, and in case of oncoming traffic, one had to drive to a further spot and stop there.
At least the passenger could enjoy the green, hilly landscape with the scattered flocks of sheep.
At Crummock Water, we took a coffee break with a view of the lake and were glad to see that some buses passed by us in the parking lot instead of encountering them on the road.
Through the small village of Buttermere, we reached the lake of the same name, where the route continued along.
Then we went up again to the 358-meter-high Honister Pass.
Our guide praised this route as the most scenic in the Lake District and indeed the views along the way were very beautiful.
After the scenic road, we arrived in Keswick.
We walked through the pedestrian zone and took a look at the small town center.
On a well-frequented footpath, we then walked towards Derwentwater.
The path to the lake leads through the lush flower-planted Hope Park.
Along the lake, we walked back towards the town center and then drove south.
Our campsite, where we planned to spend the next two nights, was located close to Coniston Water, and in the evening we took a brief walk to the lake, which we wanted to explore in more detail with the town the next day.
