Slowly we made our way from the deep Amazon towards the Andes. Chachapoyas was our destination. A small town surrounded by high peaks that served as a vacation spot for Peruvians. Since we were already in the rainy season, the weather was a bit unpredictable and wet. This area also offers impressive nature, where the Amazon jungle meets the Andes and mystical cloud forests are formed.
After a 9-hour bus ride from Tarapoto, we reached Chachapoyas. From there, we continued into the mountains with two friends to Cocachimba, where we had rented a great mountain lodge for a week. Cocachimba was a tiny mountain village in a vast valley. The whole scenery was dominated by the waterfall (Catarata Gocta), which is one of the highest in the world with its 771m height. From our lodge, we could admire it every day.
We also went hiking in the forests and surrounding valleys. We also visited the waterfall. It was a truly relaxing mountain vacation and a wonderful contrast to the Amazon, even though this region still belongs geographically to the Amazon.
