Sesimbra and the hinterland between Lisbon and Porto 16-22 May 2022

Diterbitkan: 24.05.2022

Episode 7: Praia do Ribeiro do Cavalo

The beach, which Pedro considers a secret tip among the locals, is located just outside of Sesimbra and can only be reached on foot. We descend into the bay on sandy, rocky paths. When we arrive at the beach, there are only a handful of people there and it feels like we are far away from civilization.
The beach is surrounded by steep cliffs. On one of the walls, we discover a cove, a small plateau, perfect for a night under the open sky. We set up our sleeping and cooking area and enjoy the freedom. The next morning, we start with a swim in the Atlantic. Now the beach is empty!

Episode 8: Biking in Lousa

According to internet forums, Lousa has great trails. Without much ado, we drive to Serpins and spend the night at the cheapest campsite so far. One night costs only 12 euros. The infrastructure and hygiene are impeccable.
In the morning, we go to the Louzanpark bike park. At the base, there is a bar with a toothless biker who explains the way to us in Portuguese. We decline the offer to be driven up: we want to move a bit. We are only partially convinced by the trails. While we find a lot of flow in the upper part, further down the slopes are hardly maintained and we ride through dense fern fields where Jonas promptly gets two ticks.

Episode 9: Canoeing on the Mondego

The stretch between Penacova and Coimbra is one of the most beautiful river sections in Portugal. Of course, we want to see it for ourselves. Since only guided tours are possible instead of renting canoes, we join a group. They say there are dangerous spots that you need to know.
The ride on the river takes about 3 hours, which is more likely due to the lack of current than the length of the route. The "dangerous spots" are more like normal curves where the current could push the boat against a wall. But this can be easily prevented with a paddle stroke or two.
The banks of the Mondego are quite untouched in this section, which we would normally find very beautiful. However, since we once again brought too little water and snacks and the 32°C (90°F) is not exactly fresh, we are happy about the kiosk on the riverbank just before the end of the tour.
Conclusion: Instead of a guide, next time we will bring enough provisions!

Episode 10: Coimbra

Coimbra was definitely worth a visit for us. The city is small but very charming. We spend a beautiful evening in the old town, listening to street musicians and trying local delicacies.
