By bike around the Sun Moon Lake

It takes a little longer to get to Sun Moon Lake from Taipei, but it's definitely worth it. Due to the long journey, it makes sense to plan an overnight stay. This gives you more time and peace to enjoy the wonderful landscape.

A nice starting point for this is Ita Tao, you can also visit the evening night market there and there is a good bike rental company with excellent service and friendly, detailed advice. The e-bikes were quite new and easy to ride, with a battery that was actually enough for both days.

The cycle paths around the lake are beautifully laid out, easy to ride and in many places offer beautiful views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.

There are many places where you should stop and visit the temple complexes and other sights. These include the Wenwu Temple, the Wenwumiaohoushan Park, the Ci'en Pagoda and also the Protestant church that Chang Kai-shek had built there for himself and his wife. The Xiangshan Visitor Center not only offers information and a good view of the lake, the building itself is a special eye-catcher.
